An enlarged prostate is treatable, and it does not always mean surgery. Treatment is chosen based on the severity of symptoms, the size of the prostate and each patient’s health. It ranges from simple monitoring to the latest laser surgery.

1. Watchful waiting and habit changes

When symptoms are mild, the urologist may recommend periodic monitoring along with simple adjustments: reducing fluids at night, moderating caffeine and alcohol, and taking your time when urinating. For many men, this is enough for years.

2. Medication

Some medications relax the prostate and bladder-neck muscle to improve flow, while others shrink the gland over time. They are a good option in moderate cases, always under a urologist’s guidance and follow-up, since they can have side effects.

3. HoLEP laser surgery

When medication is not enough or the prostate is large, holmium laser enucleation (HoLEP) is the reference technique. It removes the obstructing tissue with no external incisions, very little bleeding and a faster recovery than traditional surgery. Its results are durable and it works even in very large prostates, where other techniques have limits.

Dr. Bruno Rubí López is an international expert and PROCTOR in HoLEP, training other urologists in the technique from Puebla.

How is the right treatment chosen?

There is no single answer for everyone. The decision is made in consultation, weighing your symptoms, your test results and your preferences. The goal is always the same: to help you urinate normally again and regain your quality of life.
